Colm Tóibín’s sixth novel Brooklyn has won this year’s Costa prize for fiction.

The Costa Book Awards recognise the most enjoyable books by authors based in England and Ireland in five categories: novel, first novel, poetry, biography and children’s book. The five successful writers will now compete for the 2010 Costa Book of the Year Prize to be announced on January 26th.

Brooklyn tells the story of an Irish emmigrant in 1950s New York and was described by the judges as ‘a wonderfully-observed story of love and loss’. The novel made the Man Booker longlist in 2009 but failed to make it to the shortlist later in the year.

Last year’s overall prize went to fellow Irish author Sebastian Barry for his novel The Secret Scripture.
